Starting Late

The clocks change soon, Spring is here. It’s warmer and brighter for much longer than it was in January when most people made New Year’s resolutions they may already be long looking back on and possibly wondering if they’ll ever make progress on some of their goals.

If you had fitness goals for 2026 but didn’t get around to starting a plan for them yet, or a New Year’s resolution that’s fallen by the wayside it’s OK.

January is a hard time to do most things, never mind starting to chase a new goal or create a new routine or set of habits. It works for some people, but not everyone. It’s cold and dark, and there’s an obvious dip in mood after the holiday season - largely due to it being cold and dark.

The good news is, it doesn’t need to be a new year or a new week or tomorrow to start. You can start today, right now if you want.

If you started and stopped, you didn’t fail. You can simply choose to start again. Breaks are needed and quite often timing is important when setting a new goal or refocusing/recommitting to one. Sometimes life isn’t easy, and doesn’t give you the balance you want or need.

You can still make progress towards your initial 2026 goals by choosing to take the first step now. Starting doesn’t need to be a masterpiece in planning that sees the process of reaching your goals seem daunting. Starting doesn’t require Excel sheets or apps or calendars. Starting doesn’t mean having planned every workout or point along the way for weeks in advance.

Keep it simple if starting the process is hard.

If the goal is to run a 5k in the near future but you aren’t a runner, go for a walk this evening and make sure your shoes are in good condition. Simple, you’ve made a start.

If it’s to ride a 100 mile sportif this summer, check that the bike is road worthy tonight, this counts as starting.

If it’s to do your first triathlon but you don’t know where to start? Same place as the person doing the 5k, go for a walk and make sure your shoes are in good condition to start.

Don’t over think it, just start. Keep it simple, starting is significant in itself.
